DTE indicates how far you would go till you use up the last drip and fume.
When the fuel warning lamp begin to lit (= hitting reserve), you got 2.5 gal left. DTE indicated distance then always seems pretty much correlates to theoretical range based on approximate mpg at the specific driving cond.
You can check it for yourself. I never pushed the limit either to see how much accurate either. I think the owners manual recommends refuel before it hits reserve.
