the engine will not stall while driving at 50. It may stall at idle rpms when in limp home mode while cornering, or coming to a full stop, for example.
Actually, it does sound very much like the key has been accidentally hit. Happened to me once when a friend was "checking out" the "funny" ignition switch location at speeds around 90 mph :-))).
