I would suspect the ECU as well....

I would imagine if the power to the ECU went out, the car would just die as probably everything electrical was controlled by the ECU.
It could be just a bad solder joint in the ECU or bad or loose connection from the battery to the ECU power supply, the result certainly was not pleasant.
If it was a bad chip, then there was nothing one could do other than putting in a duplicate ECU that would switch over.
This is one of those things that the overall reliability for the make may improve but when something fails, the result is much more severe and down right dangerous at times.
Hope replacing the ECU would resolve the issue.
