One of the items this man told me to watch for....(out of several) was the silicon.
One of____
One of____
It-silicon- is the single most wear indicator...ie, silicon (sand/dirt) in your motor oil. Yes, I know chromium, iron, magnesium....all indicate metals from different areas of the engine....
Of course, the second major area of the analysis of interest to him was antifreeze contamination, and then fuel dilution.
About my friend--He's now retired, but his successor still utilizes his same proven methodology. My only guess to his virgin oil remark, is that a fleet of lets say a hundred + semi trucks and two hundred + cars driving XX million miles per year, aggregate mileage, and they only used one brand of oil ( one for cars and another for the semis) in all those vehicles.... Sometimes they know the oil better than the oil people do.
With a mentor like that, I'll stand my ground, if he did not recommend VOA, fine. Anyone of you guys having this man's credentials of managing a Fortune 500 fleet, with his very successful record over 30 years, step right up.
And right now, from all the SAAB semi synthetic label/mis-label over moly--It's easier to switch to Mobil 1 full synthetic 5W-30 and not have the hub-ub.
