You think $400 is a waste? I had a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS-T with 59,700 miles on it. Being paranoid, I scrimped up $1400 to have the timing belt replaced at the dealer (60k recommended intervals), along with everything else that's cheap to replace once you're removing all that junk (water pump, every other belt, etc). Having had poor experience at indy shops and knowing what can happen if the timing belt procedure isn't done properly, I decided it was worth the peace of mind to go through the dealership. The dealer had been very good to me before, as well, while tracking a mysterious electrical gremlin.
50 miles later the car was totalled after a relatively minor accident. If I'd just waited until I hit 60k, I would have saved $1400. Made me sick. Oh well, I like my Saab better, so I guess it worked out in the end.
