There is a lot of speculation going on in this thread!
Ok, IIRC, the Aero is torque (not horsepower) limited in first gear for reasons of traction, this has nothing to do with anything breaking except for the tires breaking loose which they do in my Aero on wet pavement whenever I stomp it in first gear. Even when I take it easy getting going and then floor it, the tires come loose about the time it gets to 4000 RPM. The concern with something breaking only applied to the 2000/2001 Aeros with the 4 speed automatics, these had lower torgue and horsepower than the manuals and the current 5 speed automatics.
There is simply a limit to the amount of power that can be dumped to the front wheels as torque loading transfers weight to the rear during acceleration. This unloads the front tires, which eventually will spin. The only ways to stop this are, more weight on the front axel, better tires or less torque. More weight on the front will deteriorate the handling, better tires I will get when the Michlin MXM HXs wear out and Saab has already limited torque.
The factory Saab with a torque limit in first and second is the Viggen, though I believe most of the aftermarket upgraded chips also torque limit second gear.
