The injectors get fouled and I recommend Techon Concentrate every 8K. Why wait for problems? This pattern has been very evident since the low volitility RFG-II fuels came out across the US. Problems were probably evident for folks in California well before that.
The first typical sign of trouble is hard starting. And combustion chamber deposits will create hot spots which increased the octane demand of the engine. The result can be detuned ignition timing, increased MPGs and perhaps the ECU will limit boost as well.
With a new used vehilce, you have no idea about what fuels were used or if the injectors were ever cleaned. The vehicle might have had short trips which foul things up. A vehicle shunted around a dealer's lot can have lots of cold start carbon. In this situation its a no-brainer.
