FWIW. Coming on 4 years with my 2.3 lpt 5 speed wagon. I have found that my SID is consistently about 1 to 1.2 mpg optimistic when using the car for my city, work commute, and knock around town, as compared with figures based on actual gas station numbers. And I am very consistent about where I refill until, which side the car is slanted in the station, and so on.
However--on highway trips, the SID is consistently about .3-.4 mpg low. Just went Philly to Acadia again, and registered 35.1 on the way up, with actual 35.4; 34.6 on the way back vs actual 35 (return included 25 minutes of crawling idle to get from the Deegan up to the Cross Bronx for the GWB, and then 20 miles of US 1 traffic lights because of a major NJ Pike accident.) This was best we'd ever done, we generally get 23 to 25 in the city, depending on who is driving it to whose work.
In short, the SID can be trusted for its avvrage readings and letting you know how you are doing, just base your actual on real data to be certain.
