People looking for a less expensive Saab sedan are being steered away from the 9-5 and into the 9-3. People looking for a less expensive LARGE Saab sedan are being steered to Certified Preowned. But there is no 9-3 Wagon yet, so Saab is selling a 9-5 stripper called "Linear" to slot between the 9-5 Arc SportWagon and the 9-2.
Note that these are the North American models. In Europe, it's different - it has always been different. European Linears get a black dash and cloth seats. Our Linear has always been more like the 2.3 LPT Arc that folks across the water see. On this side of the pond, the "form" dictates the motor, on the other side, people are much more free to mix and match motors, forms, and other options.
The '04 lineup makes more sense to me than the '02/'03, where the price differential between the Linear and Aero shrank relative to content, and the Arc was priced within Aero Academy Tuition of an Aero.
