Stephen's post is right on the money, as usual. In fact, this has been the case with all Euro makers there, not just Saab. Partially to adjust to bizzare Euro engine size tax cutoff points and partially because of different priorities and tastes, one can get much more of what they want there.
I would not go as far as calling the Linear wagon a 'stripper', tho. I could think of a good number of items that one could remove from it and still be in the class it is. For true stripper class, we compared a Volvo V70 wagon vs. the Linear Wagon. With decent discounts for both, and the rebate, they were comparable in price, but the Saab's level of equipment was significantly better.
(Drive a Greek spec BMW 518, THAT is a stripper :-))
