Yes, that is me on BITOG. I knew that was you, too ;)
SAAB 5W-30 is not Mobil 1 repackaged. It may be Mobil but not Mobil 1. If I had to guess what it is, I would probably say Elf Evolution SXR 5W-30.
The new SAAB 0W-30 oil is a low HTHS oil that is ACEA A5 rated. It has a very high TBN, which is necessary to get the new OPEL GM-LL-AO25 approval. This new "long-life, oil monitor" standard is applicable to 2002+ SAAB vehicles, specifically the new 9-3. Vehicles before 2002 do NOT require this oil. The generic name of this oil is Elf Evolution SXR 0W-30, which is different from Elf Evolution 0W-30 because it is more up to date. The old version has the same OPEL GM-LL-AO25 approval, as well as VW 503.00/506.00. I have not seen the official documents but I believe this oil is also used by Renault as their "long-life" oil, capable of 30000 km intervals in the newer Renault vehicles.
The bottom line is that for pre-2002 vehicles one should be looking for ACEA A3 rated oil that has the proper API rating and SAE grade listed in the owner's manual. I think that either the commonly available Mobil 1 0W-40 or the really rare "Mde in Germany" Castrol Syntec 0W-30 are excellent choices. Mobil 1 5W-30 should be fine for low mileage vehicles but, given the choice, I would choose Mobil 1 10W-30 over it. Mobil 1 10W-30 is regarded as the best Mobil 1 available in N.A. due to it's very good thermal stability and excellent "stay in grade" characteristics. In plain language that means that Mobil 1 5W-30 (and 0W-40) will become thiner (perhaps too thin) during the interval, while 10W-30 will stay very close to it's original thickness, which is much preferred. Still, the 10W-30 has fairly low HTHS viscosity and may not be suitable for sustained high speed highway driving (i.e., 80+ mph for several hours.) This applies only to pre-2002 SAABs, as 2002+ models have lower HTHS requirements.
Characteristics of SAAB 0W-30 full synthetic:
SAE Grade: 0W-30
Density @15ºC: 0.864
cSt @ 100ºC: 9.6
Viscosity Index: 168
Flash Point, ºC: 220
Pour Point, ºC: -42
TBN: 12.4
