The Hydro-Isomerized parrafin (Group III) base oil may be labelled "Synthetic" in the USA following a trial in which Castrol proved to the satisfaction of the court that there is no significant performance difference between Group III and Group IV (PAO). Per a Shell lubricant engineer, the product must be taken as a whole - the base oil plus the additive package plus the quality control in manufacture plus the distribution channels that ensure the oil **in your engine** has the properties you need.
That said, Group III oil is somewhat less expensive to produce, so if Mobil 1 is selling at about the same price as other Group III based oils, then someone's riding the market and pricing a less expensive product under Mobil's umbrella. There are many who believe it performs better, due to an inherently higher viscolity index and lower pour point. And all the oils which meet GM LL 025 (the 9-3 SS's spec) are PAO. Both of them.
My opinion - when you get into this class of oil and change it based on either conservative practice (5000-7500 miles for most people) or a program of laboratory oil testing (useless unless your driving habits are uniform month in and month out - like over-the-road truckers), the engine will not suffer from oil related problems. Period.
