Also a former competitive cyclist from the Albany area (as you know).

You may have heard of my 'incident' with a flock of chickens on the Knox-Gallupville road.

It's a fast descent into Gallupville with a chicken farm near the bottom. Bright sunny day, looking forward to getting home in time to catch the Coors Classic on TV (who remembers that?). I find the final bend is overrun with chickens! I slow and make hissing sounds to get their attention. The horde parts like the Red Sea for Moses but at the last second a couple decide they're headed for the wrong side and U-turn, one directly into my derailleur causing me to come down hard on my butt and the walkman I had in my back pocket. My speed was enough that I slid several feet removing all the backside of my shorts and a good couple layers of skin from my cheeks...both of 'em.

The wheel was bent and the derailleur jammed so the bike was unrideable. Phone calls to parents and a couple friends were unanswered so I had to tie my shirt around my waist and start walking (only 9 miles! Barefoot too since you can't walk too far in cycling cleats).

On my walk one other cyclist passes and stops to see if he could help, a local tourist. Not much he could do but laugh (respectfully) and go on.

The reason I ask if you'd heard was because it seemed any cycling event I went to for months after people I'd never met would approach me for details of the event.

C.

PS, The punchline is, the following Monday I started a new job as a driver for a local company. Sitting down most of the day.
