in the Pacific Northwest, they don't salt, just put down sand. We have very few wintery days to justify switching over to snow tires. There was one day I was driving around, and at every stop light was spinning the tires a bit before traction control kicked in. Finally thought of the winter button, and it worked very nicely.
The manumatic startup in 2 or 3 works just as well, but is not as convenient, as you have to switch over, start, and then switch back to automatic mode (if you're so inclined), and do this at every start.
I'm always wondering why magazines carp about a given car not having a manumatic mode (latest Motor Trend with the Cadillac CTS comes to mind) -- does anyone actually *use* these things after the first week with the car? We got rid of our 2001 9-3 SE for a 2004 9-3 Arc convertible, and I can't say I like the manumatic -- even though my daily driver is a 2001 9-5 Aero.
