I know exactly where you are coming from. I had/have an '88 900 turbo(now an SPG), and just happened to be at the Saab dealer so I went for a spin in a '99 9-5 base model. I loved the ride and refinement. I was on the fence, because I wanted a convertible. I like the newness of the 9-5, and I prefer the c900 convertibles.
I then started looking for cars, and honestly I felt that I could get a better deal on a 9-5 than a 9000. I was only looking at Aero, 5 spd models. I wound up with a 2000 9-5 Aero and I love it. The base model is fine, but I wanted the power. It still has the saab feel.
