Also curious if ECU can be spoofed

In the later 9-5s, I read on this board that sometimes the ECU detects an incipient DI problem and throws a precautionary CEL or goes into limp home mode or simply shuts down the car. Is that ever the result of something transient rather than permanent? I was wondering in some cases if the same DI might work again - assuming not all suffer the smelly meltdown of death - if it were reinstalled in the same car after an ECU reset (battery disconnect), or swapped into a different car where things wer still all normal. Does the ECU somehow tag the specific DI part as bad and require a new one to return itself to normal mode? Or once one car flags it as failing, would another car reject it? Or does the ECU actually "kill" the early-stage failing DI when it detects problems?
A lot of hypothetical questins, I know. Just trying to make sense out of a lot of interesting and varied anecdotal info....
