Even on the older, distributor cars, when you leave the in the full on position and the engine is not running, you risk component burn out. Some tow guys leave the key on so that they can run with your lights as well as theirs.
You have a mess, the easiest way out if which is if your insurance pays. The car is probably totalled or close to that, the tow people will claim there was an inherent fault, and SAAB may say the key was left on. If SAAB comes across, you are in luck. If your aompany pays, ditto. If neither, you need to sue SAAB and the tow company, and probably you'll get a settlement from one or both.
