I'd agree you can burn out components leaving the ignition on in some autos, but what strikes me as odd is that DI failures are not a rare occurence, and are often accompanied with burning expoxy like smell, an indicator that electrical components have shorted out. Typically in an electrical circuit a breaker or fuse is used to prevent excessive current drawn and the resulting consequences - melt down, smoke fire, etc. I think the fuse in the DI circuit is 30 amps, and it did not blow when my DI shorted out and the tow driver apparently left the key in the on position.
The harness fried and by the burn imprint on the valve cover likely ignited the harness.
I'd consider this a safety defect in a component which I already believe is a bad application of technology, or more commonly referred to as a design blunder.
