Always full of sage advice, I find his answers well founded in fact.
My Blackstone testing has yet to be concluded, but the Amsoil 0W-30 that has been in my Saab tested well at 6500 miles, and they suggested it would last 9,000 to 10,000 miles.
Yes, Saab engines are one of the crucibles of the oil testing world...if it lasts 10,000 in a Saab turbo, it should go 15,000 in a non turbo clean burn engine. Known dirty engines need not apply.
I will continue to brag about the mpg (and power???)advantage with the 0W-30 (5-8%) and Dick will back me up on this. I live in WI. If I lived in CA, I would run 5W-40 as per BITOG raves.(see Eiron's link)
The OW-30 from Amsoil is actually an 0W-38 in testing, and will thicken to about a 0W-42 in a Saab turbo over 10k. I like that, versus a thinning from shear. Saabs like thicker oils for film strength, probably in the turbo bearing, but maybe in the upper ring seal area too. Lots of stress there with the turbo at max. Aeros like thicker oil more than my Linear, from what I garner on BITOG UOA's
I run M1 5W-40 in my 9000, since it is a more demanding engine, and I am willing to give up a few mpg for film strength.
Practically All the weaknesses in the Saab engines are addressed with SYNTHETIC oil!!! Spending a few hours on BITOG can save you big trouble down the road. Choosing the right synthetic?????
Cheers,
Craig
