Testing assumption that extended warranties are bad ...

deals for the purchaser. If you buy an extended warranty from the manufacturer, sure the seller of the insurance and GM make money but don't you as the consumer also come ahead too? If you don't have a warranty the mechanic will try to charge you as much as he can. If you have GM extended plan, GM will only pay mechanic a set price for a certain problem, often this can be less than the market rate (possible reason why mechanics don't like doing original warranty work). So you as the consumer also benefits. Also even if GM does not make much money on the extended warranty, but by selling it to you GM is at least getting some money, GM mechanic gets some money (you the purchaser of the plan has to go to GM approved mechanic) as opposed you the consumer not buying a GM plan and going elsewhere for mechanical failures (in which case GM and GM mechanic gets zero dollars). So possibly a win win win (you, GM, GM mechanic) situation? Don't know if this holds water but thought I'd throw it out for debate.
