Certainly error detection would go a long way to resolve this problem. If the software could put up a warning saying that "failure is imminent" based on some threshold of the number of events experienced, it would go a long way toward avoiding the fallout of a full failure of the part.
This type of failure prediction is done all the time with computer equipment, and has saved many a system administrator's hide.
