If the new IDM is all black, I guess you got an "old stock" IDM installed.
If the part number is 9197559 it also indicates an "old stock" IDM.
The new part number from October 2004 is 30583218 and supposedly they are kind of black and blue (but I haven't seen one yet).
Buck (another Saab tech) responded that the new IDM 30583218 still has the old revision numbers (TK 3.6) on the inside which is kind of puzzling.
So to answer some of your questions.
Very rarely (never) do they use the same partnumber if a change is done to a part.
But it is possible that they use a new part number for the same unchanged part for administrative reasons.
Just last month they changed the part number for the Saab oil filter.
It has been 9144445 for the longest time but suddenly is changed to 30548485.
Holding up the two filters side by side reveal no changes whatsoever.
The only thing I have noticed is that Saab has gone to a lighter blue packaging boxes instead of the darker blue used for years.
Maybe that's why the part number changed?
