Where there are misfiring events detected, the new software helps differentiate between various internal causes or perhaps the plugs. The software might not triggered a CEL before until the number or frequency of such events reached a certain threashold. Maybe the new software will CEL sooner, but why would Saab do that if it leads to more warrany replacements. Would they really do such a thing to save a few customers from a roadside failure?
Saab is fighting with the supplier about the cost of these failures, and CAT failures in warranty and the extended coverage period. That is normal. Most of the software changes, I expect, will be to better control that charge back process. Saab had a lot of DIs returned that tested OK. They determined that fouled plugs were causing DI CEL events. So the dealers need to have the latest software on the vehicle and change the plugs, then run the engine and see if the software then detects problems with the DI. If the dealer does not do that, Saab will refuse the warranty claim and the dealer gets hurt. If the vehicle is outside of the warranty or extended coverage period, then the dealer does not have to do any of that, cause you are paying for the new DI.
For sudden death failures, the new software cannot time travel and predict such a future event, so not much that can be gained there.
If the new software can detect that the engine is dead, and cut the fuel injectors, the CAT converter might be saved from the near instant melt down that often occurs. But we don't know whats going on or what Saab is doing. So the dealer does not know much either and his response, while not of much help was atleast honest and not a pile of BS that one can also get in such circumstances.
Saab will not tell anyone what is really happening, including the dealers or support reps, as that info would leak out and could create a potential legal problem... thats what lawyers are for, to keep the technical people from blabbing about such things. Perhaps the suppliers knows about things that are happening that they will not discuss with Saab.
Meanwhile you have a Saab that might die on the road. SFOND
You can drive it, or sell it and drive something else. Another choice is to carry a spare or not. Anything else you do is probably ineffectual.
