The layshaft, the one-piece shaft with 4 gears on it, rides on a long shaft that you had to slide out. If you have a older tranny the shaft probably has wear in the plating right where the layshaft needle bearings ride. It's about a foot long. I'm not sure how much wear is allowable but it's something to consider. Take a good look at the 1/2 shifting fork. It's hard to see the wear if you're not looking closely. I'm no expert!
