busted o2 sensor?

So for anyone unfamiliar with my plight with the timing on my car (I've been furiously posting for the last 2 days), I changed the sparkplugs and ignition wires on my car and then had surging problems with the throttle (there were no problems before I changed the plugs, but given that I've put at least 35k miles on the car since I bought it, the plugs could stand a replacement and so could the wires). I couldn't figure it out; I was pretty sure I had the wires correctly installed. I regapped the plugs, tried everything I could given my limited tools and spare parts. Finally I gave up and took it to a place recommended by a couple TSN users. They just called me back and told me it was a bad oxygen sensor. My question is, is there any way I could've screwed up the o2 sensor in doing the change? Would the throttle behave normally (as it did before I changed the plugs) even if the o2 sensor was bad?
Thanks
Bry M.
