<<Spec is 20 deg at 2000 rpm, hose plugged. This is about 16 at idle, unless centrif advance is jammed. >>
Centriff advance is not jammed. But, now you have me thinking. Here's what happened. When I took the car to get registered and titled properly, a smog test is required here in CA. I took it to "any-old-place-that-tested." The guy doing the test acted as if he'd never seen a Saab before. I had to walk him through practically everything. When it came time to check the timing, I just assumed he knew how to do that, being since that's his job. He discovered that the timing was way too retarted (which explains the poor gas milage prior to that test). Then he "set" it at the given spec, which we both confirmed was 20 BTDC. However, I don't recall him doing that at the 2000 rpm point with vac hose disconnected and plugged. Again I just assumed he knew... When I got home that evening, I placed a mark along the distributor body and the valve cover, certain that was the 20 btdc reference mark. So if he essentially set the timing wrong, then the timing is actually far too advanced! Thus the pinging. Now I know what to do - I'll have it checked proper by someone who knows Saab. Thank you Kevin, and thank you saabnet.com
