Well I went out today after doing some research and bought paint for my car. I went to a local paint store that has an excelent reputation and sells paint to local car dealers, etc.
I spent about $160 on paint. Its enamel, "Pitch Black" by Dupont. I bought 1 gallon, and another gallon or so of reducer. I also bought a can of hardener to give it a little extra shine. Don't know much about how this all works, but I figure the best way to learn is to try it out on my $350 Saab.
Well, my friend, who works on cars himself and is much more knowledgeable than I, thinks that the paint is going to look worse than the paint on there now. The car currently has the original gray paint which is peeling off (well, just the clearcoat actually). I want my car to be black. I bought this car with the intentions of painting it black. Nothing wrong with gray, I just want black.
Well, my friend says that the enamel paint probably wont stick to the old paint, and that I need to do it the right way and strip it down to the metal, prime it, etc etc etc. Basically take me to the end of the summer.
My car also needs a new head gasket, and I have everything I need to change it, but Im waiting to get my other 87 900 out of the garage so I can have some shelter for the head gasket. I really respect the opinion of my friend, but he said it was going to take me probably a month to do the head gasket correctly because the head is going to have to be milled and maybe rebuilt. I know I can get the head out easily (Ive removed engines before and stuff) but Im kind of scared that it could take that long to get the car working again. He says I should worry about the mechanical stuff first (not the paint). It needs new brakes also to pass inspection, but Im planning on figuring out of I need new rotors once I get the brakes apart, which I can do once I get my 87 parts car out of the garage! I cant get that thing out because my grinder broke and I need to finish cutting it up so the scrap metal guy can haul it away in peices.
Back to the paint job...
So I'm just wondering if enamel paint will "stick" to the old paint, or if it will flake right off and run all over the place like my frined says. He said the new paint needs something porous to stick to, but I guess I was imagining that the new paint would behave somewhat like spray paint and just STICK. Bad idea maybe.
I dont know. I just wanted to try spraying new paint on the car but my friend says it will look bad and not come out as well as the car is now (which is not very good at all, faded, peeling, etc).
I just want the new paint to last a year or two. My friend says I should get Maaco or something.
What should I do? I just want to try painting a car, and if I screw up, well, I only paid $350 for the car anyway. I love the car and plan to keep it for a bit, but I'm trying to save money for next semesters tuition, etc etc etc. endless money pit.
Sometimes I wish I was just some blissfully ignorant indian living in a hut on some African plain and all I had to do was worry about spearing a couple zebras a month or so to eat and enjoy the sunsets and stuff, but life is so damn complicated. grrrrrrrr.
