Painting is all about labour and preparation. The good thing about a SAAB is you can remove trim and door stuff and badges quite easily. I am nearly finished painting my '85T. Couple of weekends with the roller.
I took the doors off and dismantled them, mainly because I replaced three of them, but the other wimdows on the car-'screen, rear window and C-pillar windows I haven't removed, just inserted thick string under the edge of the seal, so I can get paint underneath the edge of the seal. When I take the string out there won't be overspray on the seals.
My car was cochineal red, faded metallic with peeling lacquer and some huge scratches on the body where nomarks who didn't like SAABs had keyed it. First of all I cleaned the car thoroughly, then I wetsanded in 800 grade, cleaned it with synthetic thinners, then with panel wipe. Finally, after what seemed like hours I was ready to put the paint on. I don't have a spraygun, or compressor, or garage so I have used a 2" sheepskin shorthair roller on my car. I like rollers, but that's me. It's easier than spraying. I will have put on 3 coats by the time I have finished (3litres).
Painting a 900 is a LOT easier than painting a VW bug- the 900 has big flat panels and doesn't really have creases or changes in angle, so I LIKE painting SAABs.
Black is the hardest colour, but have a go and learn from the experience.
Good luck
