In short, DON'T DO IT! You will have problems down the road, probably sooner than later. First off, hardener doesn't give the paint shine, it does just want the name implies-harden. Without it, the paint will never cure correctly. Second-black paint is the worst paint to start with, as it enhances every little defect in the body work, and makes it look a lot worse than it really is. My 900 is black, with many little dents from rally use. My buddy has a silver one, with more and deeper dents, but looks a lot better than mine. The enamel will stick just fine, but since the paint you have now is already peeling, the new paint will peel with the old paint, and fall off just as fast. At a minimum, you will need to remove all the loose and peeling paint, and feather out the rest of the paint. If there is any rust showing, that needs to be taken care of now too. Do you plan on spraying this yourself? If so, you need very good compressor equipment, spray gun, water filters, paint filters, containers to accurately mix the paint, reducer, and hardener, and some other little bits and pieces. The $100 specials from Sears won't cut it. I also doubt you will get by on one gallon of paint either. The last couple of el-cheapo paint jobs I did cost about $400 for paint and supplies, not counting the $1000 of equipment I already had. Your friend is right, if you want it to last, and money is an issue, visit your local Maaco or equivalent.
