but try anyway. gloss black is a real hard color to do. if you are going to do it yourself... take your time and sand it well. it is not necessary to take it to the primer but it neccessary to strip the clearcoat and break the undergloss. your best bet is to eat the cost of the paint and spend a week prepping it for a pro. second best is to spend a week prepping it and doing it your self. it would be worth your effort to buy an extra qt and practice with some on somthing else. plastic sheet over wood? the hard part is repeating the stroke speed to make it wet but just barely. I painted a vw van in a good paint booth with good tools. never again.
