Where the hell is the tranny drain (or fill/check for that matter) on a '97 Golf 5 speed! he he
I've found the Bentley manual lacking when it comes to that car - it has images of the engine components with no relation to actual placement or orientation in the car.
Wifes car is the Golf (glorified go-cart). Mine is the Saab. I have to say I spend a disproportionate amount of time babying and beautifying my SPG.
If you have a high idle AFTER warming up, you problem may very well be the AMM. It's "limp home" default idle is around 1200 rpm, i think.
Do the "burn off" test of the AMM or swap with someone else's (with same last 3 serial numbers stamped on it) that you know is good.
