You're correct about the Saab tranny needing regular attention - especially the auto's (they only last about 70K-100K miles). I'm feeling it first hand since my (5-speed) pinion bearing just died. My SPG has about 140K, and with the few mod's I did recently, I sure expedited the failure.
I don't think the VW tranny leaks, but the vertical gasket from tranny to engine sure does. It has a thin metal flange along it, from which I lose about a 1/2 quart a month.
That illustration in the Bentley (VW) of the tranny bolts confused me, because I didn't understand its orientation.
