You know, our family has had a lot of Saabs. Since the mid 1980's to present, our family's inventory of Saabs has been as follows: 1981 900S; 1982 900 base; 1981 900 turbo; 1984 900 base; 1986 900S; 1987 900S; 1987 900 turbo; 1989 9000 CD; 1991 9000S; and a 1993 9000 Aero. During this time, I did most of the service on these cars and NEVER did I find a fuel line that was cracked or opened on its own. Mind you, in my earlier years (when I was still learning cars about cars) I wanted to change that "one way valve" that sits on top of the fuel pump on an 1987 900 turbo. When trying to complete this task, I sliced the fuel line by accident with my wrench. That didn't make me very happy. Anyhow (back to the subject at hand), that is the only time I have ever seen the fuel line get wrecked.

So, I am assuming that your fuel line has never been touched since it was tightened down at the factory. With that logic in mind, I am very confident that you do not have a leak in your fuel line. Nonetheless, you can do a quick check to determine this. I use this test often myself to see if the pump is working. Crack a fuel line around the fuel pressure regulator so that it will no longer seal. In other words, if the car was running, fuel would be squirting out at this cracked line. REMEMBER TO USE TWO WRENCES WHILE DOING THIS. One wrench to crack the line and the other to support the line that you are cracking. If you have a helper, have him or her turn the ignition key to the position where the car will actually start. While your helper is turning the engine over, you should stand outside the vehicle and see if gas comes shotting out of the crack line. If it does, then this is a quick check that your pump is working, your fuel filter is not clogged, and a proper amount of gas is coming to the fuel pressure regulator. I will be the first to admit that hooking up a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel line is the best method. However, when you are in the middle of no where, you gotta work with the tools you got.

As for your gas smell in the car; it may indeed be the case that the this smell is not related to your problem. Did you check the lines going to your charcoal canister located in the front of the left fender? It is not uncommon for the rubber hoses at this canister to crack. Once they crack, they can not longer absorb vapours from the gas tank. Hence, this may be the reason for your gas smell inside your car.

Well, hope this post adds some light to your problems. Keep the board posted - we want to help our fellow Saabers!
