Ive tried doing it right, and ended up a year later with sagging again. Ive come up with other options.
For me: I plagarized someone elses hint about strips of wood, nicely finished, placed across the headliner and held in place with screws. since the material itself was good this has done well and I really liked the look.
For my sisters car: cut and pulled down all the headliner with it still in the car. then we attached some fabric she chose (horrid zebra print plush) to the ceiling, with the 3M spray adhesive, and then reinforced with upholstery tacks. doesnt look that professional but she likes it and it was cheap and fast and when it does start colapsing we can reattach it easily as there is no foam.
Other options: upholstery tacks (like little tiny corkscrews), regular wood screws, or just rip the offending stuff down and deal with the look of brown/orange/yellow above your head.
