Yo!

Okay, all you audio experts, I could use some advice and answers. (Justin Hi-Fi, are you out there, bud?)

Lately my FM stereo radio has been sounding kinda crummy. The front right speaker occasionally makes a loud staticky sound during the music. It happens more when I have the volume turned up than when the sound level is lower, but once in awhile I get it at low volume. It doesn't appear to be vibration related, since it will happen intermittently while the car isn't even running. I opened up the speaker grill anyway and looked at the speaker. The wires were tight, connections good. It's not a loose connection.

I bought the speakers when I got the car and so they're 15 years old now. They're JVC 4" dual concentric -- sorta cheap ones, I guess. The stereo unit itself puts out 25W per channel, which in those days was considered high power, because it says HIGH POWER right on the little cassette tape door, with red lightning bolts and 25W + 25W logo on it. I can play it loud enough, but it's not very clear at when it's loud and I know a more powerful system would sound better. The car is noisy at highway speed anyway, so I'm not too particular about audio quality... just want to be able to hear it when I'm driving.

So here's my question, guys. Do car speakers just go bad when they get old? Do they start sounding muddy, lose their crispness, and occasionally make the equivalent of an electronic fart? And if I go out and spend some money for a new set of front speakers, will my sound quality make a sudden dramatic improvement?

Or... do you think my radio itself is shot? I don't really carry CD's or cassettes around in my car, so I wasn't going to upgrade to a CD player. But if I did have to get a new radio, I'd probably get one with a CD player and maybe a 50W/channel output. I'm sure that would make a huge difference in sound quality, but I don't really want to spend the bucks if it's just a speaker problem.

Oh, yeah... the rears are 4x10 triaxials and they sound fine. Not like a system with an amplified subwoofer, mind you, but they're okay.

What does everyone think?
