My $0.02 for what it is worth. I am very 'old school' wnen it comes to stereos and especially car stereos. (I still have and listen to Vinyl LP's). My requirements for a car are about the same as yours. A c900 is not a quiet enough car to warrant a super stereo IMO. your failure is probably due to decayed suspension. Light & heat destroy the suspension structures, for the woofers especially. They get muddier and then the crackling starts as the coil can now rub against the magnet. For a car, Polypropylene cones (black is better than clear for longevity) and rubber surrounds are all I will use (on woofers). Gimmicks and gizmos abound in this market. Steer clear of titanium and just about every other marketing gimick. Stick to nice sounding 2 ways and you will be quite happy and your outlay will not be as high. For the rear, I would suggest 6x9's with the 4x10 adapters. That way you can still have the functionality of the rear deck as it is. A company I have used is Madisound. I think they are web-ified now. For the fronts, I would use 4" rounds and just know that they will not go that deep in frequency. Huge magnets may affect speed reading or may hit the back side of the instrument panel. A separate tweeter can be mounted in the other round feature of the front speaker panel if you cut it out and make a grille. Otherwise, coaxial or single cone is the way to go here. As for the head unit, 25W should be plenty to drive the fronts. I would want more for the rears. You can mount a modest amp under the rear seat. The watt number is not really the best spec to shop around with. Look for its power into 8 ohm and 4. Into 4ohm it should be double if the amp is up to it. Most of the time, it may say 40W into 8ohm and then something waeak like 45W into 4ohm. Most car speakers are 4 or 6 ohm, so, as you can see, this spec number is a bit bogus. Look for low TIM and THD <0.02%. I have a really old Alpine 25W which will drive 45 into 4 (back when Alpine was a good label). Unfortunately, it is now deceased and I am using my OE Saab rear amp. It is acceptable, but far from desirable (I have a '92 900T) Good luck and let us know what you get.
