Like others stated, it seems like your speakers are going out. Try removing the speaker that makes the bad noises & gently push the speaker cone in/out. If it feels like there is tension it's blown.
It also seems to me that a external amp wouuldn't be necessary for what you want. Sure it can play louder that way but if you are happy with the 25x4 power of your existing deck, replacing that with a new deck (if it's needed) will be more then enough :o)
I also wouldn't pay attention to the power handling of the speakers you buy. 90% of the time it's totally irrelevant! If you use a 4 inch speaker which can take 400 watts or 40 watts, the radio can blow either one pretty easily. But since you have had 15 years of use with your existing 4 inchers, you must take care of the stuff so get whatever you like :o)
