Well, the saga continues.
Last night I went running out on a late night errand, and when I turned on the headlights, the console lighting didn't come on. I turned up the rheostat, and it came on only when set to full bright, with no range of amplitude adjustment. That was puzzling. A few minutes later, the console AND instrument lights went completely dark.
So, a fuse blew. Why?
Turns out there's an extra wire in the bundle leading to the radio. It goes to the console lighting rheostat, so that you can control the brightness of the radio dial at night. My new radio didn't have an input for this wire, and neither did my old one... so I just left it alone back there, the way it's been since the car was new. Unfortunately, when I installed the new radio, it must have pushed the tip of this wire to a grounding point, thus blowing the fuse.
So I had to pull the new radio back out, tape up that wire, replace the fuse, and put it all back in. Annoying, but another lesson learned!
Good thing I found this out -- it would have gone undiscovered until I used the headlights next time.
