Head gasket job will usually be around $600-$800. Not cheap. When and if you do get to that point make sure they replace the thermostat & timing chain tensioner while they're at it.
Read up on head gaskets by doing a search on this bulliten board...plenty if not too much info.
When you look at the car make sure it doesn't run hot. Fans should be on when temp. gauge gets to 3/4. Ideally it won't get that hot if the outside temp is not too hot. It's bad if the temp shoots up right after you stop in traffic or at a light. Sure sign that head gasket is suspect and maybe radiator. Another sign is if the car stumbles a bit when it is first started...coolant burning off of a cylinder.
Cosmetically...depending on which part of the country you're in check for rusting. Problem spot is right behind the lower control arm mount on old 900's...particularly on the passenger side. Driver side is usually coated with oil from the filter draining down when oil is changed. It can be repaired however.
Make sure you get the 3 peice hard cover for the top. It covers it when it is down. It's a pain but it saves your top some wear and fading. Should be in the trunk wrapped up in a vinyl cover. If not it's probably in the previous owners garage.
Keep checking this board. It gives you an idea of what to look for in these cars....but believe me...they are worth the occasional pain. Just find a good independent mechanic....dealers will kill you with big $$$$.
Happy hunting......Todd
