I just replaced all the hoses, receiver/dryer, expansion valve, v-belt and o-rings. Then put in ester oil and R134a. I got the parts from eEuroparts.com and spent about $150 (don't get the o-rings from them; they aren't the right size). I did the labor myself and have - crossed fingers - cold air. My original compressor is still working.
Check on the inside of the hood above the compressor pulley. If there is a big streak of oil on it, it means that oil has slung off of the pulley and the compressor seal is shot.
