Well, add it up. Assume worst case is botched compressor spitting shrapnel through the entire system and leaky hoses that can't be cleaned or the tech doesn't/won't risk flushing the system:
1. Compressor...$600
2. Condenser...$300?
3. Evaporator..$400?
4. receiver/dryer/expansion valve...$200?
5. Assorted lines...$500?
6. Suck and recharge with R134A or R406..$120 (Goss' Garage says IIRC 406 retrofit ONLY in his shop...too much hassle with R134A retrofit) but IMHO if you replace the condenser/evaporator/compressor with ones designed for R134A you'll be fine!
Or about $1800 worst case...and worst case is that you have to replace the entire system. Don't laugh...one of my real estate partners had to have the entire R12 system in his Honda Prelude replaced as above but it ran about $1200 in 1988...the Hondas in DC/MD got ac as a dealer option and the kits were still in stock....
