I have an elbow check valve only in the supply line on my 90 900t, and I am sure that is all you need. My gauge pressure drops off just like yours does. I think that the FPR at atmospheric pressure is enough to prevent fuel from running back the return line.
The pressure bleeds off to 1 BAR(zero gauge pressure) but the fuel stays in the line so you get instant start up. If a "supply line" elbow check valve were put in the the return line, she's gonna blow, similar to your test results.
The Bentley manual is confusing as hell when they discuss the return line check valve. Perhaps some older pumps used a check valve in the return line that held pressure all the way through the pump up the supply line. My pump assembly has a plastic scavenger device beneath the pump motor that prevents the pump from starving.
