My standpoint about the trannys is this, the starting culprit is because you have to put it in reverse every time to get the key out.
If for any reason it's not done properly and you hear a grind or crunch. you actually chip small pieces of the reverse gear off.
Those pieces circulate through the transmission until they are picked up by the magnetic drain plug, which can take awhile.
Going from the front compartment through to the rear compartment of tranny, some of this pieces passes right through the pinion bearings and create knicks in the bearing races. From there on it's a one way to destruction.
IF Saab would have addressed this issue and allowed the dealers ( forced them) to replace the oil in tranny every 30K miles at the longest. Many trannys could have been saved together with the reputation.
I have yet had to rebuild a tranny a second time, all of our regular customers gets the oil changed every 30K major service.
As a comparison, the auto tranny hardly ever looses the pinion bearing, (a whole bunch of other things goes bad with them , but that's another story)
Cheers
