The only quantitative data on transmission life w/ different lubricants is on the Townsend Imports web site. They report the longest life w/ Amsoil 20-50 oil and say good things about Mobil 1. They're not very happy w/ Redline MTL. However, they do not report the number of transmissions that provide the sample for their report details of how the data were collected. I suspect that the sample is relatively small so the standard deviation for their transmission life w/ different lubricants is probably large. The anecdotal reports (I got xxxxx miles w/ brand X) are useless.
I think Justin is dead on the money when he says that Saab transmissions fail when they want to and the lubricant used isn't a major consideration as long as it's changed regularly. I suspect that subtle differences in tolerances, particularly related to the carrier for the pinion bearing, but undoubtedly for other parts too, explain the differences in longevity.
For the record, I own three 900 turbos w/ the 5-speed: '85: 200,000+ mi, transmission good. '87: 150,000 miles, transmission good. '88: 150,000 miles, three pinion bearing failures in the last 50,000 miles.
