dinosaurs used gear oil in both differential and manual trans. more recently, motor oil (10w30) was spec'd by mfgrs for better shifting, mostly due to thinner viscosity.
Honda had spec'd 10W30 for accura and honda transaxles, but mid 90's came up with a synthetc light gear oil taht is now used in all their cars. The GL4 gear oil rating indicates it will lubricate gear meshes at high loads better than any motor oil. The custom blend has specific additives to improve syncro action (like redline MTL). It is not like tha oold gear oils. It is specifically designed for manual transmissions, not engines, and not just differentials.
If MTF is not available, Honda allows 'temporary' use of non-synthetic 10W30 briefly, until MTF can be installed.
I've listed more technical info in the past (search MTF) to support my initial MTF recomendation, but Honda's practice is probably the best argument. Since I first introduced it to the bb, many have tried it, and all liked it.
If u crank the boost and use it, more hot viscosity is needed, and I found NEO synthetic 75W90 HD works well in all weather.
