1) There are 1000's of Saabs that go up to 3/4 before the fan kicks on...with the A/C off. With the A/C on, the fans run all the time, thus keeping your temp under 1/2. Saying that "cars are not meant to run over 1/2" is a sweeping statement unfortunately not based on fact. Go out and run your car in traffic with the A/C off and you will find that the temp will rise above 1/4 until the fans come on. The temp will then drop down and the fans will cycle off. If you had a 89 degree fan switch, the fans will not come on until 3/4. This assumes that your temp sensor and gauge circuit does not have excess resistance, which would reduce gauge needle movement.
2)Rodding the radiator is not a guaranteed fix. I'll bet the rodding left a clog that broke free coincidentally when you changed the hose.
3) A bulge in the hose does not impede flow. It bulges because there is a blockage beyond the hose in the radiator. Or it's just a bad hose that can't stand the normal pressure. The radiator blockage is like a dam holding back water and you broke the dam loose. Read up on Archimedes...
4) While you said that there was no leak, you should realize that any tiny leak will be enough to reduce the pressure in the system.
