balloon. Your water pump is strong because it is pushing with enough pressure to balloon the hose. Practically speaking, pressure is constant throughout system with a minor gradient resulting from the pump, i.e. pressure is lowest behind the pump. It will be highest just before any blockage. This pressure is transmitted back to the hose and the hose bulges.
You probably dislodged a blockage in the radiator before you saw the temp drop. A new radiator is the proper way to solve the problem. With all components good, your car should run at or just below 1/2 on the highway in the summer. In traffic, the needle should go to 3/4 and with an 89 degree fan switch the fans should kick on. With an 82 fan switch, the fans should kick on just over 1/2 and keep the temp there. The problem with a 82 fan switch is that the fans will run more often(duty cycle) and wear out sooner, especially if you have a turbo with a delco fan. I fully agree with KevinK's opinion on fan switches that 89 is better. One last item, the temp gauge will read lower if the temp sender threads at the head are corroded or the ground to the meter is weak.
