Well, 5 hours later and i think i did the job correctly, thanks to all who replied.
I'm not that confident working on the car myself just yet, so i'm still quite hesitant taking things apart. I did this same repair about 2 months ago, as the screws holding the dust guard behind the rotor keep falling to the bottom of the guard and therefore creating a rattle. Last time i didn't know how the calipers came off, so i therefore couldn't get the rotors off, which also meant i couldn't directly access the holes where the bolts go to keep the guard in place. I therefore tried to "start" the screws into the threads by using a pair vice grips, and then continuing with the vice grips to tighten, all the time working in the narrow area between the dust guard and the rotor. I got 2 of the 3 screws done this way (left the 3rd out) but i guess they weren't tight enough as the problem has resurrected.
This time i couldn't budge the caliper bolts, so i attmpted the same short term fix above, but this time i could only get 1 of the 3 threaded, and i knew this wasn't sufficient to prevent the guard from hitting the rotor under road conditions. So i tried to tackle the bolts again, but to no avail, so i went back to the short term fix and still couldn't get more than 1 bolt to stay. Tried the bolts a final time and got them to off!!
Used some loc-tite on the bolts that keep the shield in place and made sure i tightened good, now that i had the whole face of the screw in front of me and was able to get some good pressure on the screws when tightening. Put everything back together, took a short test drive to make sure the car stopped properly, and all appears well (for now).
This may be the biggest project i've undertake so far, although it's really just the next step from the last time i did this fix, i feel getting those caliper bolts off was a BIG step from just taking the brake pads off (as there was more at stake if i couldn't get it back together).
I'm happy it's done, hopefully for the last time!!, and now i have to start researching the cooling system flush i have planned for next weekend.(it never ends!)
