Removing the calipers is NOT a necessary step in replacing the brake pads.
My above situation was not for brake pad replacement... i had a situation where the bolts from the guard behind the rotor fell out and were "trapped" between the rotor and the guard. Unfortunately, the holes where the bolts go are behind the rotor, and unaccessible unless you remove the rotors (and the rotors won't come off of my '86 900S unless you remove the calipers, they get "caught" on the threads of the wheel that the lug nuts go on). Therefore, it was necessary for me to remove the calipers in order to get the job done "right".
