While air in the line will casue symptoms like yours, the question is how did the air get in? If things were fine previously and no recent work has been done on the clutch/brake system, I suspect that you might still find either a slight leak at the slave or a bad master cyl seal. Get some brake cleaner spray and clean things to find a fresh leak. As Jim suggests, it takes awhile for a small leak to show up at the flywheel inspection hole. If no leak shows up, then suspect the master, as discussed. If you need a new master or slave, you will still need to bleed.
To bleed the system most easily you need pressure at the resevoir cap. There are methods to reverse bleed with pressure to the slave or vacuum at the slave with a mity vac. The most primative system can be made out of an old bicycle tube cut a foot on either side of the valve and clamp off one end with two popsicle sticks and a small c-clamp(some have knotted the free end with success). Stretch the other end over the resevoir opening and seal with a hose clamp. Pump up the tube with a bicycle pump and open the bleeder screw/valve down at the slave. As the fluid comes out watch for bubbles. When clear of bubbles, you're finished. You must make sure that you keep the resevoir topped up during the process or you will introduce more air.
More sophisticated systems involve getting a spare resevoir cap and drilling a small hole for an inflation needle, which is sealed in with glue. BMW parts houses like Imparts and Bavarian sell kits that work like this for about $40. One uses a small garden sprayer tank as a pressur pump and the other uses tire air pressure. I have one of the tire pressure kits, but do not really like it because you should not supposedly exceed 20psi on the clutch master seals so you then have to let air out of the tire to get below 20.
